Comprehensive Vision Examinations for Children and Adults
Vision problems in children can interfere with proper visual development
and cause visual impairment. It is estimated that approximately one in
20 preschool children and one in four school-aged children have an eye
problem that could cause permanent vision loss if left untreated. According
to the American Optometric Association (AOA), infants should have their
first comprehensive eye exam at six months of age. Children should then receive additional eye exams at three years of age, and then at age five or six. For school-aged children, the AOA recommends an eye exam every two years if no vision correction is required. Children who need eyeglasses or contact lenses should be examined annually or according to their doctor's recommendations.
The AOA recommends an annual eye exam for any adult who wears eyeglasses or contacts. Adults who do not need vision correction need an eye exam every two to three years up to the age of 40. More frequent examinations are necessary for adults with diabetes, high blood pressure and other disorders impacting the health of your eyes. If you are over 40, it is recommended to have your eyes examined every year to check for age-related eye problems such as presbyopia, cataracts and macular degeneration. Because the risk of eye disease continues to increase with advancing age, everyone over the age of 60 should be examined annually.
